If you are trying to build a business that runs on online commerce in any way, you’re going to have to tackle shipping concerns. You’re going to have to think about how products move from your store to the customer. This means that you have to deal with shipping. Even though the Internet Age has made things a lot simpler, we still need regular services like the mail to run properly.

You will need to make sure that you start with the basics. Getting a postage meter and a scale is a great way to handle your shipping costs. The more sophisticated postage meters can really keep track of how much money that you’ve spent mailing out packages. However, you don’t have to spring for those — just keep track of it yourself! Until you really get into high volume shipping, there’s nothing that says that you have to go with the top of the line stuff yet. In fact, it might be better to start small so you can master every aspect of your business.

If you are going to have someone handling your packaging needs, you will need to make sure that you have a solid system. For example, not every customer will want to actually use the same mailing system as you. Some people will want expedited packages, while other people will want to go with a slower method in order to save money. This is the case with heavy electronics or other heavy items.

You need to make sure that you have a shipping policy, or people will pester you with a lot of phone calls. And if you’re running a toll free number, that means a lot of money out of your pocket as well. So you need to ensure that you have a clear plan of how you handle packages. If you really want to be on the safe side, you’re going to need to make sure that you force insurance on every package. This way, customers have a way to claim their money in case something is broken or doesn’t come through properly.

Now is the right time to think about shipping. The faster you can ship items, the more likely it is that you will develop loyal customers that will sing your praises. Figure out when and how you want to handle your shipping schedule. Every day? Every week? Try to figure it out and then the rest will flow smoothly — trust us on that!

We wrote about customer service, which means that it’s probably a good idea to start thinking about refunds as well. Even though a lot of business owners feel that refunds should be avoided at all costs, the reality is that you cannot please everyone. In fact, you shouldn’t even try to please everyone. If you try to please everyone, you’ll just end up frustrated. There are some people that will find fault with anything they purchase, and that means that it’s another trip right back to your store to handle that. You just need to make sure that you’re focusing on the bigger picture and taking care of things in a way that’s really going to help you get everything solved in the long run. It’s okay to not really be able to take care of things on your own and you need some help processing returns. A good secretary can help you keep everything organized.

You should always make sure that you have a refund policy in place. You need to make sure that the customers you have can see the return policy. Of course, some people believe in no returns for any reason. However, that’s a bad recipe for a lot of negative feedback. If you cannot give refunds, you’re saying that you’re scared that you’ll have to put out money. Sometimes you just run into customers that feel that you’re not a good fit. You can certainly do no refunds if you want to, but keep in mind that other customers will have ways of getting you back in the end. They can file chargebacks and disputes with their bank, which can hurt your processing ability. It’s better to just refund the money and try to focus on the business customers that actually want to do more business with you in the future.

Other business owners will tell you the same thing — there will always be a refund percentage. This is why it’s never a good idea to try to spend all of your revenue. You need to make sure that you set aside enough to take care of this properly.

You will get to a point where refunds don’t bother you. Of course, when you just start your business it can be tempting to take it personally. After all, a business is something that is very personal when you build it yourself. It’s something that means a lot to you. However, you have to make sure that you’re not getting so caught up on this that you forget that it really is just business — good luck out there!

Dealing with a new company means that you’re going to have to adopt a lot of new habits that might not seem natural at first. However, you really do have it in you to create something incredible — it’s just a matter of planning out exactly what you need to do, and how you’re going to pull it off.

First and foremost, you must understand that every business really does need good advertising. Advertising is your way of getting people to check out your company. If you don’t do that, then you’re going to have a really hard time trying to get anyone to really invest in what you are trying to accomplish. When customers buy from you, they’re in effect investing in your growth and future success.

You have to spend money in order to make money. Today’s society is a very digital one, which means that you really need to make sure that you start thinking about incorporating both online and offline methods of advertising. The online methods can be a lot easier than you think. What you will need to do is make sure that you set up a website where you can talk about your business. This will actually help you in the long run, because you’ll be training your customers to go online and see what you have to say. You really want to try to build expertise in any market that you reach out for. You might feel that it’s something that can be a little out of your reach, but the truth is that everything is possible through marketing and advertising.

You also want to take some time to look at how your market actually is. There’s no point in trying to create an advertising campaign if you don’t even know who you’re talking to.

Try to observe your audience in their natural “zone”, so to speak. IF you’re trying to sell them things that help a certain hobby thrive, then you need to be at events where people are sharing that passion and talking amongst themselves. That’s the best way to figure out what your audience really wants, and what they really don’t want. If you don’t do this, then you’re going to have a lot of problems down the road, and that’s never a good thing.

Advertising is an ongoing process, so don’t feel like you have to stop — keep going!

If you really want to run a business that’s as profitable as possible, you’re going to need to make sure that you can focus on making things as separate as possible. Remember that a business is considered a virtual person. Do you really want it mixed up in your personal life? Not if you want to avoid as much liability as possible.

There’s nothing wrong with trying to get things separated, but you might not know where to begin at all. Thankfully, we know just where to begin.

First and foremost, you need to make sure that you have a separate number for your business. If you really want to thrive as a company, you can’t have phone calls coming to your house. This is also a security concern, especially if you’re using your home address. This means that angry customers could stalk your home and endanger the lives of your family members. It’s better to have a post office box or a private drop box where you can handle this business better.

Don’t forget that you’re going to need to think about getting a separate bank account. When it comes time to do your taxes, you really don’t want to have personal stuff mixed in with business stuff. It really makes it harder for you to do your deductions. If you are going to use your personal car for company purposes, you need to make sure that you are counting only the mileage that is related to your business trips. If you don’t do that, then you’re going to really have a hard time telling the IRS exactly what deductions should hold up and which ones shouldn’t.

In addition, you also want to make sure that you even have a separate email address for your business. If you can get something like yourname@yourbusiness.com, that’s even better. Remember that everything you do is about your brand and about your reputation.

If you don’t keep things separate, your customers might feel that your business is really only a hobby. You’re not really willing to invest in it, and that’s not really the type of message that you want to send to your audience. You have to think about how you’re being viewed at all times.

A separate address, phone number, physical location, and bank accounts are all great ways to really show that you’re running a legitimate business and you plan on being here for a long time. Anything else wouldn’t really carry the same message. Even if you’re going to work from home, there’s nothing wrong with having a virtual office that can give the impression that you are more established and solid! Good luck out there!

Enterprise resource planning is all about having options — in this case, it’s the ability to see the “bigger picture” as a distance, making it easier to determine what else needs to be done. When you’re starting a business, it might not seem like you need to integrate your ERP systems into what you’re doing, but you definitely should.

Assuming that your business has begun to grow in size, it is even more important to think about how to manage resources. The well run business is one that looks at and accounts for just about everything that you can possibly think of without even thinking about it. It’s an automatic process that is done through the right pieces of software for business.

Can you incorporate ERP into your organization? Of course you can. In fact, you probably already have done sort level of ERP in your business, but it’s just time to formalize things. It’s just time to make sure that you have a systematic approach to your business.

There are a few reasons for the use of a system rather than just using blind intuition in your business. One of the top reasons is that it helps you build a way to build even more value in your business. An automated system for business is highly prized by anyone that would want to buy your business outright, or even just to invest in. When you can show that you really have looked at just about every factor that can lead to success in your business, you will find more people wanting to get involved in the day to day operations of the company.

Getting employees to scale your business out farther is easier with ERP as well. When you have a key understanding in the needs of every division in your business, you’ll be able to fill in employee requirements with ease.

There are some costs in increasing your ERP solution, but the truth is that these costs are far less than the cost of inaction. If you were to have no organizational system in place, you’d end up just leaving your entire business open and exposed to any and all trends, regardless of whether or not they’re actually good.

So when it comes to enterprise resource planning software, one thing is clear; your business will not grow as large as you would like without it!

One of the biggest challenges when it comes to business is making sure your brand stays in the minds of your clients day in, day out. There is no easy solution to doing this, but one of the most effective ways to remain in their memory is with promotional products.

Choose merchandise your clients will want to receive and keep, so they will learn more about your brand, your company and how to contact you.

Look at what products are most commonly used in the workplace and your daily life and which ones last a long time – this will ensure that your brand will be remembered for months or even years to come.

Here are just a few products that are particularly long-lasting:

Nation of tea drinkers

You need to base your marketing decision on your target audience, and if you’re hoping to promote yourself to the British public, all you need to do is offer a free mug for potential clients or customers who enjoy a cup of tea.

This is because, on average, we consume 165 million mugs of the brown stuff every single day, creating plenty of opportunities for people not only to use your branded mug, but also to see someone else doing so.

It’s not just tea we love either, and an average person in Britain consumes three cups of coffee on a daily basis, so you can be confident that a mug with your name, website and phone number on will be seen and used very regularly indeed.

Not only are they popular to receive, but the British Promotional Merchandise Association – or BPMA – revealed that we can’t let go of our free mugs and 18 per cent keep them for the longest period of time compared with other free promotional products.

We love to write

We may all be devoted to our computers, smart phones and tablets now, but we still write – and therefore need to use a pen – on a daily basis. This is why pens remain one of the most popular promotional gifts, with 39 per cent of the public saying they would love to receive a free pen over other promotional giveaways.

Not only do we enjoy being given them, but we are also fans of keeping them for substantial periods of time, with a BPMA study indicating that 12 per cent of the British public hold on to a pen longer than any other promotional gift.

Get moving with USB sticks

We are relying on computers more than ever, and with a mobile society, this means that we need USB sticks to help us transfer important documents from one system to another.

Whether we’re travelling between different offices, want to do our work on the commute or have a number of computers in our households and want access to regularly-used documents all the time, flash drives are incredibly useful. Therefore, by using branded memory sticks in your campaign, you can feel confident your company’s name will be spotted on numerous occasions – not just by the recipient, but also by colleagues, friends and even fellow commuters.

BPMA findings reveal that 15 per cent of the British public held on to a USB stick for the longest period of time compared with other promotional items.

A brick and mortar business is one where you actually open up shop in your physical location. This is something that most people are familiar with because most cities are filled with different businesses. However, does that mean that this is really the best way to start your business? Not at all. You have to really step back and make sure that you’re building the type of business that you ultimately want. It’s tempting to just try to work on a physical business because that’s what you might be expected to do. Indeed, a lot of people feel that you haven’t started a real business until you’ve opened up a shop. Yet the business world is changing fast. It’s quite possible to have a vibrant business online without too many problems at all.

You just need to figure out what you want to do and how you’re going to actually do it. Sure, you might feel a little overwhelmed at first, but that’s okay. This is something normal. The more you practice your business skills and do your own research, the easier it will be for you to actually get things done in the grand scheme of things.

First and foremost, you need to think about the business. When you actually step back and break it down, an offline business can really cost a lot of money. You have to make sure that you secure the right space, which means paying rent or even outright buying a property. In addition, you will also have to make sure that you can focus on the utilities as well. If you think that you’re going to be using the same amount of utilities as what you would normally use at home, you might be in for a real shock. It can take a lot more than that to actually run your entire building. Most businesses use lighting and other equipment that runs at higher operating rates than what consumers would normally have.

The key here is to just use the right amount of time to really see if you can afford to open a traditional business. If you can’t, then it’s time to really start thinking about an online business. The money you save in operating costs can be passed on to your customers, which is always a good thing!

Starting a new business is definitely a challenge, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a challenge that isn’t worth fighting for. The more planning and preparation that you put into your business, the greater chance you will have of real success. When we speak of success, we’re not just talking about the short term. Far too many new business owners only think about the short term anyway.

It’s time to start thinking about long term success, and doing just about anything you can to protect that success. What happens to your business if you get sick? This is a valid and honest question that most people will not really have an answer to. The simple reality is that most new business owners are just hoping that they won’t get sick. That’s a hope that turns out to come true — most business owners go on to lead great businesses and lead healthy lives. However, what if it doesn’t end up that way?

Remember that when you’re building a business, it’s not just about you. For example, if you have staff then you really want to make sure that you have measures in place to protect that business. If you have to go out of business, this means that the people that count on you every day will have to go with another business for their employment needs. In a bad economy, that means that it might take months before they find anything worth working on.

Are you thinking about the type of life that you’ve always wanted, and knowing in your heart that business is the right way to get there? Then you need to look into income protection coverage that can help give you the same type of income that you had when you were running your business. It may not be your full salary from the company, but it can often be enough to take care of your bills. You don’t just want to hope that you will get disability cover form the government, because their thresholds are often too low for you to qualify for anyway as a business owner. This means that you will need to take matters into your own hands to protect your family’s way of life.

Isn’t that worth looking into, when you really think about? Of course it is, so don’t delay — look into income protection measures today!

When one goes into business for themselves there are a lot of decisions that must be made. Insurance should be one of these decisions that are made when opening a business. Business insurance differs in many ways from your typical insurance policies. Every business is a bit different and pertains to a different industry which necessitates different types of cover that are included in the policy. Of these types of cover too common kinds are Professional Indemnity Insurance and Public Liability Insurance. In many situations people believe that these are actually the same kind of coverage. However they are quite different. If you want to find more about the differences between these two types of insurance, visit Markel Direct.

Professional Indemnity Insurance protects of business in the event that one of their clients would file in negligence claim against them. Sometimes as part of running a business you must bestow your professional expertise on your clients. Despite your best intentions sometimes things can go wrong. This can lead your client to initiate a negligence claim against you. This is where a Professional Indemnity policy can come in handy. It actually covers different types of expenses associated with the negligence claim. For instance, it will help pay for any legal expenses that you accrue to defend yourself. Additionally, a Professional Indemnity Insurance policy will help pay for any damages that are awarded to your client.

Public Liability insurance is different because it pertains to claims made by a third party. This third party would not necessarily have to be a customer whereas claimants towards Professional Indemnity policies must be a customer. If you think about it businesses have numerous contacts with their parties. Sometimes whilst on your property, they could be injured or have damage done to their own property. This type of insurance will protect you from these kinds of claims made by third party individuals. Have a look at www.markeluk.com for more detailed information!

Giving yourself the edge in a competitive job market can be tricky, which is why figuring out your USP – or your ‘Unique Selling Point’ – can be a valuable way to get ahead. Jobs are not always easy to come by and anything that helps you to stand out is unquestionably a bonus. Finding your Unique Selling Points and demonstrating how it is likely to be beneficial in a potential job and to a hiring company is a highly effective way to further your career and set you apart from your competitors.

Applying for jobs

How successful you are in being hired for the jobs you are applying for will depend on whether you have that extra special ‘something’ to offer the role. This is your Unique Selling Point. Whether it’s your incredible organizational skills, your ability to manage a team, or just your sociable, magnetic personality – your Unique Selling Point is what is going to get you the desirable jobs. You should think about what it is about you that is likely to connect with the job in question, and why you, over any other candidate, would be able to achieve real lasting success in the role.

Finding your Unique Selling Point

It’s not always that easy to pinpoint exactly what your Unique Selling Point is. Often, our most valuable skills are those that come most naturally to us, and therefore we might not always notice them. The way to discover what your most unique attributes are is to think about what you are really good at in day-to-day life and how these skills might be beneficial to the job you are applying to.

Often, our Unique Selling Point is based on something unusual or ‘different’ we have done in the past – you might be a tenacious, determined person because you’re a keen mountain climber in your spare time, or you may be highly persuasive because of relevant jobs you’ve done in the past.

Your Unique Selling Point is what sets you apart from your competitors in the job market, and aside from the rest of your necessary skills, it is what will ensure that a potential employee will remember you above the rest. Ultimately, jobs are matched with candidates depending on whether they have the relevant skill set. By highlighting your Unique Selling Point, you are demonstrating why you should be hired above your competitor.
